Hi, my name is Laura Burak and I am a registered dietitian, a foodie, a wannabe chef, a yogi and a mama in the Long Island suburbs outside NYC. I have been passionate about delicious, fresh food from an early age and began cooking healthier meals for my family when I was a teenager. My interest in health and nutrition directed me to a clear career path and I never looked back. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition from Penn State, one of the only nutrition undergraduate degree programs in the country. I immediately moved to the Big Apple after college to begin a dual dietetic internship and nutrition master’s degree program at New York University.
I now have over 15 years of experience in nutrition and food studies. I have worked with patients of all ages, from all cultures and backgrounds. My work has helped people ranging from the 8-year-old picky eater to the poorly controlled diabetic to the new mom who is struggling to lose the baby weight. Although the majority of my time has been spent working in hospital and private practice settings, I have been an adjunct professor at NYU, written for several food and nutrition-related publications, and most significantly, I am a mom to a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy who love to challenge my encouragement of green foods.
Before moving out of the city, I worked for the private practices of Joy Bauer Nutrition and Brown and Medina Nutrition as a nutrition counselor, and as a clinical dietitian at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Prior to that, I worked for five years in the ICUs as a critical care dietitian at Beth Israel Hospital in downtown Manhattan.
I find no greater pleasure than when I help a client struggling with their weight management, chronic disease, or ailment. I relate to my clients and their struggles, and we work together in the most realistic way to improve their lives. I strive to create a positive, comfortable environment for people to discuss what can sometimes be very serious and sensitive topics.
Many of my clients have been through the gamut of diets, gimmicks and menu plans that consist of mostly rabbit food and cardboard crackers. My clients learn to appreciate the power of food on their health without sacrificing their social life, travel plans, and overall lifestyle.
I also have the pleasure of working with many children, adolescents and college students (and their families!) to build a healthy foundation now and for their futures.
It’s time to finally ditch the diet and eat real food!
